Joe Bidden Plans to Attend the Detroit Auto Show

Joe Biden, the American President, said on Sept.2 that he plans to attend the Detroit Auto Show later this month. Currently, the U.S. government under his administration is trying to increase the U.S. investment in electric vehicles and battery manufacturing.

This months Detroit Auto Show will be the first time the event has been held since 2019. It will be open to the public from Sept.17th to Sept. 25th and is expected to focus on the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles.

On Sept.2nd, the U.S. Department of Commerce invested $52.2 million in a Detroit regional project called “Global Travel Hub to help Michigans auto industry with its transition to electric vehicles and autonomous driving vehicles. At this event, Biden said: “I’ll be there. As you should have noticed, I am a car fan.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce said, although they got more than $5 billion in private investment, the outlook in the Detroit area has been threatened by the increasing global competition in electric and autonomous driving vehicle market, by the rapid innovation in new mobility solutions and by the aging workforce who will need the constant training to keep up with new products and technologies.

The White House had expected that US and foreign auto makers to conduct a series of major investments to build new battery plants in America and produce electric vehicles.

Biden hopes that, by 2030, at least 50% of new car sales in the United States will come from electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. When he served as the vice president during the Obama administration, Biden attended the Detroit Auto Show and was a vocal advocate for bailouts of GM and Chrysler, now part of the Stellantis Group, between 2008 and 2009.
