The advantages of Steer-by-Wire are numerous, such as light-weighting and packaging flexibility. One of the most important advantages is that there’s no steering column to cause injury during a crash since the steering commands are transit to steering gear electronically via wiring harness.
Steer-by-Wire supports quiet wheel steering, rectangular steering wheel, and free steering wheel arrangement (or even cancel) to save more legroom for the drivers.
02 Improve the steering feel
Steering feel is a subjective term. It refers to all the feedback from the steering wheel to the driver’s hand under various road conditions.
A motor is applied to simulate the steering feel in the Steer-by-Wire system, which can be switched freely between the sport mode and comfortable-relaxed mode according to driver's personalized demand.
03 Improve handling characteristics
The Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) of the Steer-by-wire perfectly solves the contradiction between "sensitive" and "stable".
For instance, when cruising on highway, the steering feel is supposed to be stable and light, so a slower steering ratio is welcomed. In contrast, when turning into a tight corner, a quicker steering ratio will speed up the response and reduce steering force considerably.
